Forum: GratefulDead Subject: call me crazy,

deadheads, and no offense – but I think it’s time to wake up, lighten up, and get more serious… all at the same time. Look, the jury’s in – nearly 45 years after the Dead started and 15 after Garcia’s death – we were right! There is a spirit of life there that isn’t going away. Children of children not yet born are going to listen to these tapes with something like love and wonder. Now I just think acknowledging that changes the whole tenor of deadheadedness – which to me has been tinged with like 15 years of trauma and wandering in the wilderness and clinging to the past since Garcia died.

Here’s some free advice: go bowl a few games. You can go by yourself like Fred MacMurray in Double Indemnity, or with your friends like the Dude, or with your family like Ozzie and Harriet. Sometime in the second game, roll a first ball and take about a step and a half past the foul line, turn and look back at the rest of the place. It’s a whole different ballgame, which is what the Dead in the 21st century are going to look like, at least IMHO.

Garcia himself anticipated something like this – talking in Rolling Stone I think near the end of his life – about the idea of a coming radical shift in human consciousness, which in typical Garcia fashion he applauded as being a whole lot more interesting than just Jesus coming back and saying: “I’m here!” Point is the real, flawed, wonderfully recorded Grateful Dead are going to fit right in, I think, and I’m a little worried that the real, flawed, wonderfully self-obsessive deadheads are going to get left behind. (Did I really just write “left behind”?)

I know how annoying or even infuriating a post like this can be, which is why I’m slipping it in here at this ungodly hour – but feel free to have at it. Eviscerate this absurd post, kill my ideas A LOT! I will be most…grateful. And oh yeah – Happy New Year!

PS – Don’t take too much time on the other side of the line at the bowling alley – either you’ll see it or you won’t, and it won’t be too long before you get yelled at.

If I knew what point you were trying to make, I would respond accordingly. Any willingness to elaborate?

I always meant to reply to your post but thought it would look too stupid coming under the next post of me as a loony tune. Don't know if you will receive notification of this after so long but all I meant was deadheads do seem set in the past - what happened, which Dark Star from November of... and so forth. Garcia made the most cogent explanation of what 2012, the idea of it, might be - a different, better age or stage of human consciousness - and I think Garcia's music will fit right in should that happen. I was just trying to flip deadhead thinking (I know that sounds arrogant) to see that listening to the dead is probably far more of a connection to the future than it is to the past. It might be the only thing most of do or really care about that people will still care about in a hundred years. Then also the improvisational nature of the dead is not just a technique, I don't think, but who they are - and I think that is really important too. So it's not just which concert from '77, but sort of what note would garcia play next.
